Tesla Motors has had a name change and will now be known simply as Tesla, Inc. The company announced earlier this morning that the change would be taking place and gave reasoning behind the decision. Tesla CEO Elon Musk made 2016 more about clean energy efforts and has expanded beyond electric cars. Tesla also makes home batteries, as well as solar roofs and the company acquired SolarCity which was a solar panel company run by Elon Musk.
Musk has never been one to shy away from his ambitions, especially for Tesla. Last July, he revealed his second version of the company’s “Master Plan”, which shows the vision Musk has in mind for Tesla’s future. Musk wants to use Tesla to “create stunning solar roofs with seamlessly integrated battery storage, expand the electric vehicle product line to address all major segments, develop a self-driving capability that is 10X safer than manual via massive fleet learning, [and] enable your car to make money for you when you aren’t using it.”
This isn’t the first time a company has dropped part of their name when expanding their product line. 10 Years ago when Apple launched its first iPhone the company dropped the “Computer” from its name and has now simply been known as Apple Inc.
